Our Story
Germiston Callies Harriers Athletic Club was established in 1921 in Germiston, making it 105 years old in 2025.
Born from an idea of Johnnie Jackson, a former Scottish Cross country champion, who relocated to South Africa, the Club was established in the Germiston area and has progressed over the years to develop a very rich running history.
The club was primarily a cross-country running club, which, in 1947, Germiston Callies Harriers broke into the long-distance road running scene and especially Comrades.
Some of the great names in South African long distance running over the years have been members of Germiston Callies colours.
- Wally Hayward -5 Comrades wins and completes comrades again at age 79 and again at 80 years old.
- Jackie Meckler -5 wins
- Mercer Davies – 1 win
- George Claasen-1 win
- Alan Robb-4 wins and 12 Golds
- Lettie van Zyl -3 wins
Today (and for the last 40+ years), the Club is situated at Germiston Stadium.
The club is very proud of its track and field section as well and boasts several Springbok athletes. The latest Protea athlete is Marisa Beukes, a Masters long jump athlete.
The constitution AIMS AND OBJECTS
The aims and objectives of the Club shall be: –
- To provide athletic recreation for members of the Club.
- To promote and/or assist in promoting athletic meetings, competitions, and races with or without a view to financial gain.
- To promote, assist and encourage athletic sport wherever possible.
Callies has become a great running and social club, and we pride ourselves on our traditions. Our colours are well recognized as being one of South Africa’s noble clubs. We as members are very proud to wear our colours.
The club is committed to cultivating a healthy lifestyle amongst our Germiston community as well as the greater running community.
